Social cost of carbon under a carbon-neutral pathway

چکیده

Abstract Climate change is the challenge of century, and achieving goals Paris Agreement will require worldwide cooperation mutual effort. Over 120 countries have made their net-zero commitments, quantifying social cost carbon (SCC), i.e. climate damage caused by an additional ton CO 2 emissions, under a carbon-neutral pathway would provide price benchmark for policymakers. Here, we set in detail emission trajectories different jurisdictions based on submitted nationally determined contributions. We then assess global regional warming, damages, SCC with Policy Analysis Greenhouse Effect integrated assessment model. find peak warming about 2.1 °C relatives to pre-industrial levels this century our pathway. And even if all meet not be sufficient limit 1.5 relative levels. compare using fixed discount rates, dynamic discounting, equity weighting approach. Notably, introduction weights increase estimated from 79 (11–186) 291 (83–592) US$ per tCO . damages borne primarily warmer poorer countries, profound inequality likely undermine efforts eradicate extreme poverty. Statistics current taxes trading prices show that they are notably lower than or SCCs, suggesting system does adequately reflect externalities emissions. More studies needed aspects impacts, help refine mechanisms align domestic interests interests, facilitate implementation national commitments place.

The social cost of carbon

The social cost of carbon may be the most important number you’ve never heard of. U.S. climate legislation may or may not make it through Congress this year, but in the meantime, the Environmental Protection Agency is moving ahead, authorized by the Supreme Court to limit greenhouse gas emissions. The Department of Energy is setting energy efficiency standards for residential appliances and com...

Calculating the Social Cost of Carbon

The paper discusses the determination of the social cost of carbon (SCC) using the PAGE2002 model used in the Stern Review. The SCC depends sensitively on assumptions about future economic development, the range and likelihood of economic and social damage arising from climate change at future dates and the discount rate to apply to that damage. The paper critically examines the choice of pure ...

Revisiting the social cost of carbon.

The social cost of carbon (SCC) is a central concept for understanding and implementing climate change policies. This term represents the economic cost caused by an additional ton of carbon dioxide emissions or its equivalent. The present study presents updated estimates based on a revised DICE model (Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy). The study estimates that the SCC is $31 ...

Risk Premia and the Social Cost of Carbon: A Review

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions not only lowers expected damages from climate change but also reduces the risk of catastrophic impacts. However, estimates of the social cost of carbon, which measures the marginal value of carbon dioxide abatement, often do not capture this risk reduction benefit. Risk-averse individuals are willing to pay a risk premium, an additional amount beyond the differ...

Which Social Cost of Carbon? A Theoretical Perspective

This paper develops a theoretical foundation for the social cost of carbon (SCC). The model highlights the source of debate over whether countries should use the global or domestic SCC for regulatory impact analysis. I identify conditions under which a country’s decision to internalize the global SCC is individually rational. Nevertheless, I show that obtaining international consensus on a part...
